We are very proud to announce that for the project “Glocal 2012”, Incubate offer you an opportunity to win a residency at organic farm ‘t Schop in Hilvarenbeek, a small village just outside of Tilburg.  A professional jury, comprised of representatives from Incubate, ‘t Schop, LIB (the agricultural organization for the Brabant province) and the town of Hilvarenbeek, will choose the best idea, which will be rewarded with the possibility to work and live on the farm for two weeks in September 2012, and perform at the annual Incubate festival in Tilburg, September 10-16, 2012. SEND US YOUR APPLICATIONS BEFORE JUNE 4^th!

To apply, you have to meet up a number of criteria:
- You are not from the Netherlands or Belgium (the Global part of things).
- You are a musician, or music is the main discipline of your art-practice (multi-disciplinary artists are welcome).
- You are a solo artist, a duo or a trio.
- You live in a city.
- You are ready, willing and able to produce a new work / artistic product based upon your experiences during your stay on the farm.
Your proposal needs to be focused on the following ideas / parameters:
- The project aims on generating dynamics between urban and rural communities, in this case those of Tilburg and Hilvarenbeek.
- The idea has both global and local aspects.
- Your project uses the farm as a gateway towards the town of Hilvarenbeek and its people, cultural life and communities (for a list of organizations and other information, please check the appendix of this document). We encourage activities together with the local communities during your stay.
- Your project creates awareness about the agricultural function of the farm and its products.

We offer you:
- A residency of minimum 10 days, maximum two weeks at biological farm ‘t Schop in Hilvarenbeek.
- This residency will be in the period of Sept 5 – Sept 16^th, 2012, right before the Incubate Festival.
- Travel expenses to and from Hilvarenbeek & Tilburg for the residency and the shows.
- Hospitality of the van den Broek family for two weeks, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, and of course a bed.
- A unique possibility to join the farmer in his daily routine on the farm, and work with the farm animals and crops.
- The possibility to work in a relaxing and inspiring environment.
- The possibility to connect to a lot of new interesting people and ideas.
- Two slots at the annual Incubate festival in Tilburg, in the weekend of September 14, 15 or 16, 2012, to present your project. These slots consist of:

o    One show at ‘t Schop, with complimentary lunch / diner for the attendants – Sept 16^th
o    One show at one of the festival venues in the city of Tilburg – Sept 14, 15 or 16th.

Furthermore, we will offer you productional backing and documentation:
- A basic sound studio (speakers, microphones, (digital) recording materials, and special equipment  and devices you might require for your artistic work. (Everything within reason of course).
- Other work materials, again within realistic boundaries.
- A calm and quiet workspace at ‘t Schop.
- You get the opportunity to write about your experiences, and get it published on the Inlog.org blog of Incubate (1000 unique visitors per day). Furthermore, we make a small documentary on the project, which we will launch on the Incubate Vimeo channel. Of course, you can use this documentary for your own promotional purposes as well.

London trio Factory Floor is coming back to the Netherlands again. The band, who have signed to James Murphy‘s DFA Records this fall, is coming at the 17th of May to Effenaar. With their music, which The Guardian describe as synth-noir, it sounds like they’re mixing modern-day electronic music with ’80s synthwave. That’s why it isn’t weird to hear that New Order drummer Stephen Morris is fan of the band and is working with them as we speak.

The guys from Sheffield, 65daysofstatic, are working their asses off. In 8 years time they released 5 EP’s & 4 albums. Last autumn they released their latest extraordinary project; they recorded a complete re-score for the seventies movie Silent Running. Besides making records, they band is also playing a lot. About two weeks the band will return to the Netherlands to play a few gigs, including one at Mezz, Breda at the 9th of April.

Initially, we saved a place in our timetable for them to perform on Incubate 2011, but unfortunately they had to cancel. Shit. But these things happen. No hard feelings towards Yukon Blonde.
What was the reason we booked them? Well, we wanted you to see this band, because we really dig their sound. And now we’re offering you the opportunity to see them after all. Because we’re giving away 2×2 tickets for the show in Ekko, Utrecht on February 18th!

Yukon Blonde is a 3-person group from Canada. Their 2010-debut ‘Yukon Blonde’ passed under the radar in Europe, which is as sad as it is weird: tracks like ‘Brides Song’ and ‘Wind Blows’ are both very strong tracks in their own way. In 2011, the trio released their EP ‘FIRE//WATER’ which is a foretaste of the next full-length album, which will get a 2012-release. Their music can be best described as an up-tempo sunny folky indie pop. That sounds pretty weak, we know, but just listen to it below and we’re sure you’re going to like it! It’s amazingly catchy!

Oh, and make sure to arrive early, because Are You A Lion are playing as well. The roots-folk band are one of the biggest talents in The Netherlands at the moment, if you ask us.

The cream of the crop of the Dutch metal scene Textures is hitting the road again.  Together with the British metal band Sylosis they’ll visit eleven european venues for an European tour. The last gig is on 11 March at the 013 here in Tilburg, and we are giving away 2×2 tickets.

Incubate is the first European festival opening up the source of their festival information for the use of applications. Incubate is constantly in search of new ways to serve the audience and this is the next step in that search. This way, Incubate wants to share data with their visitors, to create a more pleasant, more interesting and more meaningful value to visiting the festival.

The internet has changed in the last five years, and one of those changes is the importance of apps. Due to apps, websites are getting less important. Web- and software developers can build their own Incubatewebsite or -application through the Application Programming Interface (API). Information about artists, timeschedules, venues or the latest festivalnews can be easily collected. This information can be used in apps for devices like iPhone, Android or Blackberry.

Developers can create (for example) apps with a game element (Incubate quiz, guess the location, artist or newsfact) or apps that can save the visitors’ new music discoveries during the festival, with a link to Spotify. Or they can create a flirt-app or maybe an app with all the venues. These are all possible ideas, thanks to API.

That’s why Incubate is launching a competition together with internet company Freshheads. Everyone who think he has a good idea and makes an app or a website for it, gets the chance to win 500,- euros. There is a seminar on the 10th of February at Freshheads, where more information will be given and a detailled explanation about the available content of the API will be presented. More information about the competition is available at the seminar on the 10th of February and via this blog. From that day on, the applications can be submitted. Every submitted application will be shown in an overview on www.incubate.org.

Previously, Incubate made it possible for visitor to submit text, audio, video and photomaterial to the festivalwebsite www.incubate.org via a ‘wiki’ method. They also put their business and policy plans online on www.socialfestivalmodel.org, so everyone can use it.

Gaudeamus Muziek is giving away 3×2 tickets for Enfant Terrible presenteert Elitepop. It’s on Thursday the 2nd of February in Huis a/d Werf, Utrecht. Elitepop is an evening with electronic live music from the universum of Dutch label Enfant Terrible. A total of five acts will give a performance that night. Those five acts are, Logosamphia, Woud, Neurobit, Puin + Hoop and Neugeborene Nachtmusik. These artists all have an electronic background that’s between pop and art. Logosamphia is coming with a live performance which tends to noise and improvisation. Lo-fi, experimental, ambient and improvisation are the keywords of Woud. Neurobit is performing with Nintendo Gameboys and DS-devices to create minimal music. The last to Puin + Hoop is making improvisation with experimental and Neugeborene Nachtmusik creates dark and ritual post-electro music.

Man from the South is playing with Bird at Ketelhuis in Eindhoven this sunday, January 22nd. The show starts at 15:00 and it ends at 18:00 and you can win tickets! Man from the South is a solo-project of Paul van Hulten. He is also known as Paul from Woody & Paul. It will be the first time he plays solo on Eindhoven’s soil.

Ketelhuis is a beautiful industrial room which accommodate the perfect atmosphere and acoustic for the melancholic semi-acoustics song from Man from the South. His supporting program is Bird. Bird is a trio from the Netherlands. Two guys and a woman playing indie/folk like acoustic songs. They make records DIY-style and playing at places where there’s a breathing space for music. A place where Bird feels at home.

The Caretaker is all about lost memories, amnesia and nostalgia to old times. Creating a deep beautiful, but sometimes sinister atmosphere he tries to take you back in your personal history through electronic ambient music. Pleasant memories, bad dreams, being alone in the dark, all these emotions overtake the listener. If you’ve seen the Kubrick movie ‘The Shining’, you will get an idea of the beautiful but disturbing feelings The Caretaker tries to evoke.

The Swedish David Wenngren is Library Tapes, pioneer of post-classical/neoclassical piano music. Library Tapes started in 2003 with David Wenngren and Per Jardsell. Wenngren hadn’t even touched a key of a piano, let alone played the piano! But he practised and listened to great artists like Sylvian Chaveau and Goldmund and he developed his own style. After the first album Per Jerdsell went his own way and David Wenngren became Library Tapes. The sounds that Wenngren produces are like subtile field recordings, with scratching and ticking noises of old 78-RPM record.

Sleepingdog has two members Chantal Acda (Chacda) and Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid, A Winged Victory for the Sullen). Chantal Acda has been performing as Sleepingdog since 2006 and in that same year she played at the ZXZW Festival (former name of Incubate). She worked on her first two albums with Adam Wiltzie and he became such an essential part of her music, that he became a member of the band. Sleepingdog is based on the fairy-like atmosphere of Iceland and goes beyond the limits of New-Folk and Folktronica.

After continuously growing audience numbers in Berlin and Hamburg, Barock Lounge comes to Tilburg! In Barock Lounge club culture and baroque music meet each other. In a relaxed atmosphere, the Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg intertwines their music with the music by Berlin club-DJ Brezel Göring (you may know him of the pretty cool and über-German group Stereo Total). The soothing sounds by Corelli, Purcell and Händel get transformed by Göring, who creates extra dimensions to the music with his samples. Balletmusic enriched with science fiction sounds. The famous Canon by Pachelbel becomes a wonderful B-movie soundtrack. Baroque improvisations versus electronica jams.

Yes, we do think that’s a very cool concept!

Deafheaven is a melding of epic Post Rock leanings (Envy, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) with experimental Black Metal (Xasthur, Weakling, Leviathan), and classic era “Screamo” (Orchid, Crimson Curse) into something never successfully experienced before.
While Hierophant is a band for fans of Trap Them, The Secret, Black Breath and Oathbreaker.
The night will be opened by Dutch band Fire Walk With Us, who make a solid combination of post-rock, post-metal and shoegaze. You can download their debut for a pay what you want price here. That’s always a good thing.

We probably don’t have to introduce these bands, but here it goes:
TIKA make beautiful alternative rock with a subtile alt. country sounds. It consists of Marien Dorleijn (Moss) and David Pino (El Pino & The Volunteers), 2 heavyweights in the dutch indiescene. They went to the Canadian town La Peche for ‘In A Cabin With…‘ to record with local musicians. The outcome was called TIKA.
I Am Oak‘s ‘Oasem’ won a 3voor12 award for best album. And rightfully so! This melancholic folkgroup by Thijs Kuijken became one of the best folk noir groups of The Netherlands in the last couple of months.
Akward I is another pearl. Djurre de Haan (also playing bass in that other amazing Dutch band Alamo Race Track) keeps his folk music very minimalist. Vulnerable, but unbelievably beautiful. His debut ‘I Really Should Whisper’ is full of those songs.

Gaudeamus Muziekweek is giving away 3×2 tickets for ‘The Invisible City’. It’s this thursday, December the 8th, at Huis aan de Werf in Utrecht. An evening where the heterogeneous sound of the contemporary city is centralized. Electronic meets acoustic meets ambient meets noise. The evening will begin with the ‘Electro-Harmonics’ who will give a live improvisation session where musicians from both electronic and acoustic music come together on stage. Martijn Pieck (The [Law-Rah] Collective) came with the idea and the first edition will be with Pieck, Zeno van den Broek (Machinist, electronica and field recordings), Peter Johan Nyland (Hadewych, percussion) and Coen Polack (Living Ornaments, saxophone).

After the ‘Electro-Harmonics’ there will be an introduction to BJ Nilsen about noise and urban sounds and a short interview with Nilsen. He is going to play an exclusive live set based on the album ‘The Invisible City’. ‘An image created by the unseen and unheard sounds of the city, in a shape of complex and desolate narrative suite full of ambient sounds, noise, rustling and cracking that explore the unsuspected and unpredictable physical and psychogeographical impact of the urban sounds and its bursting vivacity.’

What do you get when you combine the filthy 60s sound of The Sonics with the punk sound from The Ramones? The band Black Lips. You can win the latest Black Lips album ‘Arabia Mountain‘ which is a great album full of garage rock and rattling pop sounds from the 60s. After the huge succes in Theater De Machinefabriek in Groningen, Noord-Nederlands Toneel (Northern Dutch Theater) brings the Captain Beefheart-inspired Low Yo Yo Stuff (LYYS) to De Effenaar.
In this play, Frank Lammers plays Rikkie Black, a fan of Captain Beefheart who thinks he’s born in the head of the Captain. The idea behind LYYS  is retrieving the artistic and social freedom. LYYS is a search to the ‘Lost Record’, the album that was recorded by Beefheart in 73, but never released. It’s a hallucinating trip through life and the world of Captain Beefheart. Don van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart), just recently deceased, formed the group Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in the sixties. Their album ‘Trout Mask Replica’ was produced by Frank Zappa and sent out a shockwave through the pop-, rock and bluesculture. His music contains elements of blues, acid-rock and free-jazz.

After Lawler, Gregg Kowalsky is lined up, he build cassetteplayers and repared elektronic acoustics  to loop and create a multi-dimensional reality. Last but not least is Jozef van Wissum, a Dutch lutenist who lives in New York and works with a lot of international musicians to bring the lute out of the musuem and give it a new meaning!

Morphine is definitely one of our favorites, here at Incubate HQ. To say they were innovative is an understatement. A completely new sound back in the day. Legendary songs like ‘Cure For Pain’ and ‘You Look Like Rain’. And of course, the band of Mark Sandman. The frontman and famous for playing bass with just two strings. It had never been done before.
Sandman passed away some years ago, and now PLAY Festival in De Melkweg, Amsterdam shows the official documentary about the man himself and Morphine. Oh, and you can win 2×2 tickets for it on Saturday November 19th. But that’s not all.

In honor of Mark Sandman, the other bandmembers perform that night as Members Of Morphine. A very special and unique liveshow with Jeremy Lyons bringing the grooving rocksound to the stage once more. You have to be here!

Gaudeamus Muziekweek gives aways 2×2 tickets for the concert New Music For Early Instruments! It’s this thursday, the 17th of November at Huis a/d Werf, Utrecht! It’s part of a series of concerts that is being held at Huis a/d Werf. But we know what you may think, what does New Music For Early Instruments mean? The name basically says it all, new music will be played on ‘old’ instruments.

There will be three artists performing thursday evening R. Keenan Lawler, Gregg Kowalsky and Jozef van Wissem. The trio worked together in Brooklyn, New York on The Issue Project Room which is a fellow stage of Gaudeamus Muziek. Now they are coming to Utrecht to perform for you! R. So that means you can experience the first experiments with electronic music by Dick Raaijmakers in the Fifties, next to the most recent see-through technological installations by Daan Roosegaarde. The first video installations and interactive artpieces like Jeffrey Shaw‘s Legible City, and Erik Hobijn‘s controversial Suicide Machine next to the augmented reality rabbit Tibb.

And not only the EXPO is definitely worth a visit. We’re big fans of Matthew Herbert as well. Matthew recenty helped with Ridley Scott’s ‘Life In A Day’ soundtrack and Björk’s ‘Biophilia’. And he recomposed Mahler’s 10th for Deutsche Gramophon. On STRP he will perform his ‘One Pig‘ project live.

‘One Pig‘ is the story of one farm animal in particular, that was being followed from his birth untill his death and after that. Matthew Herbert recorded it all. He documented the life of the pig from birth to adulthood to, eventually, the slaughter. Due to English laws, he couldn’t record the slaughter itself, but he could document the process before it, the cooking and the consuming. And if that’s not enough, he made instruments from the remaining bodyparts: a drum of the stomach, an instrument based on the blood etcetera.

The result is an ode to the lifecycle of an otherwise anonymous animal. A work that brings up questions and insight in the presence of an animal in a society that underestimates its use and meaning.

This is something we really love. Tilburgs very own Bram Stadhouders just released a new CD: ‘Bell Time’ featuring Sidsel Endresen and Jim Black. We already blogged about this some days ago.

During the 2010 edition of Incubate Festival, Stadhouders performed with the Norwegian vocal artist Sidsel Endresen (a.o. Jon Eberson group) and the American drummer Jim Black (a.o. AlasNoAxis, Human Feel). This went so well, that they decided to make an album. So we’re extremely proud about this. And thanks to Muzieklab, we can give away 3 CD’s!

Bram Stadhouders started out as a guitarist and composter. After he won many prizes, he started focussing on jazz, rock, electronic and contemporary music. He played with Staplerfahrer, Spinvis, Laïs and Noel Redding. Next to that, he also did projects with Onno Govaert, Eric van der Westen’s XTD and Terje Isunget IceMusic.
And now he presents his latest project with Sidsel Endresen and Jim Black. It’s jazzy, electronic and even a bit ambient at the same time, with the haunting vocals of Endresen on top of that. It’s wonderful! Take a listen below if you’re still not convinced!

IconAclass is the new project of rapper/producer Will Brooks, also known as MC Dälek. With this project he goes back to his roots, so this is rough old-skool American hiphop, without any blingbling or gangsters. So not only fans of Dälek should dig this, but hiphop fans in general should really check this out.

If you love hardrock music and if you visit shows regularly, you know what to expect of Shaking Godpeed. For those who don’t:
They played hundreds of shows already and it made them a smoking rockmachine. Their sound lies somewhere between The Stooges, Deep Purple, garage and hardrock. Their album ‘Awe’ got virtually only positive reviews.
Support-act is Traumahelikopter. And yes, we love Traumahelikopter. We like them so much that they’re performing on the next edition of Incubated this week (in collaboration with Popronde). So if you can’t make it out this Thursday (but you should. It’s FREE!) in Paradox for Incubated 11, make sure you’ll arrive early for this garagapunk outfit from Groningen!
